Automatic litter box everything you need to know in 2026

An automatic litter box cleans itself after every use. The system separates clumps from clean cat litter and automatically transports waste to a closed collection drawer. This means you no longer have to scoop manually every day and the litter box stays clean at all times. On this page you will find an explanation of how the automatic cleaning works, which types exist and which cat litter works best. You will also read what to look for when buying an automatic litter box and which models we recommend after extensive testing.

What is an automatic self-cleaning litter box?

An automatic self-cleaning litter box is an electric litter box that cleans itself after your cat has left. The system separates clumps from clean cat litter and automatically transports waste to a closed collection drawer. This keeps the box clean without you having to intervene manually.
With a regular litter box you manually scoop out clumps every day. A self-cleaning litter box does that for you, multiple times per day. The waste is transported to a closed waste container, so unpleasant odours spread far less than with an open litter box.
A clean box also has a direct effect on your cat's behaviour. Cats are naturally hygienic and prefer to avoid a full or dirty box. That can lead to accidents outside the box or more stress than you realise. Automatic litter boxes are more expensive than traditional models, with purchase prices between 100 and 400 euros. For households with multiple cats that investment often pays for itself quickly.

How does the automatic cleaning work?

The cleaning always starts only after the cat has left the box. A sensor registers when your cat is present. After leaving, the system waits an adjustable time of 5 to 15 minutes, after which the cleaning cycle begins.
The most common mechanism is the rake: a sliding element moves through the cat litter and transports clumps to the collection drawer, while clean granules remain behind. More expensive models use a rotating drum where the box rotates and clumps fall through a sieve into a closed compartment.
Some cats find the movement exciting when the box rotates. Most cats get used to it quickly if you give them time. Switch the box off the first week so your cat gets used to the smell and shape, then gradually activate the automatic cleaning.
Smart models track via an app how often your cat uses the box. This also keeps the litter box fresh longer and provides insight when something changes in toileting behaviour. Power consumption is minimal: most electric litter boxes use 10 to 20 watts per cleaning cycle.

Electric litter boxes: which type suits you?

There are three types of electric litter boxes. Which type of automatic litter box works best for you depends on the number of cats, your budget and whether you want to closely monitor your cat's toileting behaviour.
Semi-automatic litter boxes require manual action for cleaning, such as tilting the box or pressing a button. Fully automatic models start the cleaning cycle themselves after each use. Smart litter boxes do that too, but additionally offer app integration so you can track per cat how often and how long the box is used.

Automatic litter box for large cats

If you have a large cat such as a Maine Coon or Ragdoll, the interior dimensions of the box are an important consideration. Standard models are often too cramped for large cats to turn around comfortably. A self-cleaning litter box XXL provides the extra space that large cat breeds need. The box should be at least one and a half times as long as your cat without its tail.
Also check the capacity: most automatic litter boxes have a litter capacity of 6 to 9 litres. For large cats or multiple cats it is better to count on the higher end of that range.

Which cat litter do you use in an automatic litter box?

The type of cat litter you use determines whether the automatic cleaning works properly. Clumping cat litter works best for models with a rake system. The rake pushes through firm clumps and transports them to the collection drawer, while clean litter remains behind. If you use non-clumping litter, loose granules can block the mechanism.
Silica granules are an exception. They do not clump, but absorb moisture and odour effectively and work well in rotating drum models such as the Petlux. This means you need to refresh the litter less often. Always check which litter the manufacturer recommends for your model.
Wood pellets and other non-clumping litter disrupt the operation of most automatic litter boxes. They break apart into sawdust, which can block rakes and drums. Cats generally prefer clumping litter. I tried different types with Snowy and Nootje. Snowy accepted everything. Nootje consistently refused the box with silica granules for the first few days.

Is an automatic litter box safe?

Yes, if used correctly. Automatic litter boxes use sensors that detect when your cat is in the box. Safety sensors stop the cleaning immediately if a cat enters or returns to the box. The cleaning cycle always starts only after the box has been vacated. Automatic litter boxes are designed to prevent pinch hazards, so your cat can use the box safely.
Modern sensors are reliable, but it is wise to test the box during the first week while you are present. There is a caveat for kittens. Most manufacturers advise against use for kittens younger than six months or lighter than approximately 2 kilograms. Weight sensors do not always trigger reliably with very small kittens.
Nootje had just turned six months when we started and I kept a close eye on her for the first few weeks. Sensitive cats sometimes need more time to get used to the sound and movement. Let them discover the box at their own pace.

How do you keep the automatic litter box clean?

An automatic litter box keeps the box cleaner than a traditional litter box, but still requires regular maintenance. Empty the collection drawer roughly once a week with one cat. If the collection drawer is full, the cleaning is less effective. With two or more cats it is better to plan for every three to five days.
Check the filters regularly and replace active carbon filters in time. They help with odour control and are a simple but effective addition to the closed collection drawer. Cleaning the inside of the box itself is periodically necessary, typically once a month.
Automatic litter boxes function better in a dry environment. Humidity affects both the cat litter and the electronics. Preferably do not place the box in a damp bathroom or basement. Also check the litter level weekly and top up if needed. The box only retains clumps properly when there is enough clean litter in it. A box with too little litter cleans less efficiently.

Buying an automatic litter box: what you need to know

When buying a new box there are four points to pay attention to. An automatic litter box is a practical solution for anyone who does not want to scoop every day, but there are choices that determine how well the box works.
The capacity of the litter compartment varies by model. Most automatic litter boxes have a capacity of 6 to 9 litres. For one cat 6 litres is usually sufficient. If you have three cats, count on at least 9 litres.
The interior dimensions are especially important if you have a large cat. Also pay attention to the size of the entrance: your cat being able to easily get in through the entrance is just as important as the total space inside. The box must be large enough to turn around comfortably, otherwise your cat will not use it.
A smart model with app integration provides insight into your cat's toileting behaviour and can signal deviations early. You monitor your cat via the app and see immediately when something changes. Useful if you want to monitor your cat closely, but not necessary if you simply want a self-cleaning litter box.
Automatic litter boxes are more expensive than traditional models, with prices between 100 and 400 euros. If you currently spend a lot of time manually scooping every day, you will quickly recoup that investment. Also factor in the litter costs. Silica granules are more expensive per kilo than clumping cat litter, but last longer.

Frequently asked questions about automatic litter boxes

No, if used correctly. Electric litter boxes automatically remove clumps with a motor and are equipped with safety sensors that detect your cat's presence. The cleaning always starts only after the box has been vacated, and stops immediately if a cat returns. The system keeps the box clean, so you do not have to clean it manually every day. Let your cat get acquainted with the box during the first week while the cleaning is still switched off.
