Stainless steel, ceramic or plastic: which works best?

This is the question I get most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on your situation. Plastic fountains are cheaper and lighter, but the inner wall scratches more quickly. Those scratches are hotspots for bacterial growth. If you buy a plastic fountain, clean it every 4-5 days - not every week.
Stainless steel is the most hygienic: bacteria cannot penetrate the material. The downside is the price - and some cats refuse to drink from a shiny metal bowl. With Snowy it worked fine; Nootje barely drank from it the first week. Ceramic sits in between: the material is just as hygienic as stainless steel as long as there are no chips or cracks, but a dropped ceramic bowl breaks easily.

Mould in the fountain? That is almost always a cleaning issue, not a material issue. Even the best stainless steel fountain will grow mould if you do not clean it for weeks. Set a weekly reminder.

Who is a water fountain suitable for?

Good for

  • Cats that drink too little (fountains encourage drinking behaviour)
  • Households with multiple cats - continuously fresh water without hassle
  • Owners who travel (1.5-3 litre reservoir bridges 24-48 hours)
  • Cats with kidney issues or bladder problems - adequate fluid intake is crucial

Less suitable for

  • Owners who do not want to clean the fountain for weeks - then a regular bowl is more hygienic
  • Cats that are very sensitive to noise - the pump sound gets familiar, but some cats never adapt
  • Small spaces without a power socket near the drinking spot

Frequently asked questions about cat water fountains

For plastic fountains: full cleaning every 4-5 days. Stainless steel and ceramic are less prone to bacterial growth and can be cleaned thoroughly weekly. Replace the filter in the Catit Flower every 4 weeks - slightly longer with soft tap water, slightly shorter with hard water.

Everything about cat water fountains: review juli 2026

Cats are naturally desert-dwelling animals and instinctively drink little. In the wild they get most of their moisture from freshly caught prey. House cats that eat dry food are therefore chronically at risk of dehydration and kidney problems. A water fountain does not solve this completely, but flowing water attracts most cats more than standing water in a bowl.
When choosing a water fountain there are four core questions: (1) Which material suits your situation? (2) How well does the fountain filter the water? (3) How quiet is the pump? (4) How easy is the fountain to clean? This comparison answers all four based on real tests with Snowy and Nootje - no manufacturer claims.
The Catit Flower wins on three of the four criteria and is therefore our best choice for most cat owners. The Pioneer Pet Raindrop is the better choice if hygiene comes above all else and you are willing to pay more. The Veken ceramic fountain is the best choice for a low budget without too many quality compromises.
Note on ceramic fountains

Ceramic is only as hygienic as the surface layer is intact. A chip or crack - even a small one - is sufficient for bacterial growth. Check a ceramic fountain monthly for damage and replace it at the first chip.
