Mabel's verdict - after 6 weeks of testing
8,5/10
4.3 out of 5 stars

The Tractive GPS Cat is the only tracker with which I could follow Snowy in real-time up to several kilometres away.

Location accuracy in urban areas is excellent - deviations of less than ten metres are normal. Outside built-up areas accuracy decreases slightly but remains usable. The biggest downside is battery life: with real-time tracking the Tractive lasts no more than five hours. The monthly subscription costs (minimum 4 euro) are an ongoing expense to factor into your decision.

Pros

  • Real-time location without delay - map refreshes every two seconds
  • Lightweight (35 grams) - Snowy did not notice it on her collar
  • Activity monitoring: sleep, active and resting distinguished per cat
  • Works worldwide via mobile network (175+ countries)
  • Waterproof (IP67) - reliable in rain too

Cons

  • Battery life with real-time tracking: 3-5 hours
  • Mandatory monthly subscription (€ 4 to € 8 depending on duration)
  • Accuracy decreases outside urban areas and with poor GSM coverage
  • Tracker must be charged daily with intensive use

GPS accuracy in practice

The Tractive combines GPS with GSM masts and wifi triangulation. In my neighbourhood (residential area, good GSM coverage) the deviation was on average less than eight metres. On the map in the app I could see exactly which garden Snowy was in. I also tested the tracker on a rural path at the edge of our village - there the deviation increased to forty metres, which I still find acceptable.
A critical note: in dense built-up areas with tall buildings the tracker can temporarily lose signal. That happened to me twice in six weeks, both times near a block of flats. After two to three minutes the signal was back. For urban outdoor cats this is something to bear in mind.

Set up a 'safe zone' in the app around your house. You will then immediately receive a push notification when Snowy leaves the zone. This is the feature I use most.

Battery life: the biggest downside

With real-time tracking (refresh every two seconds) the Tractive is empty after three to five hours. In power saving mode, where location is updated every two to ten minutes, you get two to five days. Snowy is an active outdoor cat who regularly goes far from home - I used real-time mode during the day and saving mode at night. That meant charging daily.
The charger is magnetic and clicks on easily. Full charge takes two hours. As a downside: the charging port is on the back of the tracker and the magnet does not always align properly. Twice I faced an empty tracker in the morning because the charger had fallen off during the night.
Tip: use saving mode at night

Set a schedule in the app: real-time during the day, saving mode at night with a ten-minute update interval. This gives you two days on a charge without compromising daily use.

The Tractive app: clear and reliable

The app is the strongest point of the Tractive. The map is based on Google Maps and loads quickly. You see the current location, the route of the past 24 hours and daily activity statistics. Setting up safe zones, viewing history and adjusting the tracking mode are all accessible within two taps.
Activity monitoring is a pleasant bonus. The app distinguishes between sleep, active movement and resting. After two weeks I had a clear picture of Snowy's daily rhythm - she sleeps an average of 14 hours per day and is most active between five and nine in the morning. That is not a primary buying consideration but a nice extra.

Test log - 6 weeks

  1. Week 1

    Installation and first trips tracked

    Strong start

Tracker attached to Snowy's breakaway collar (35 grams - barely noticeable). App set up including safe zone around house. First real-time tracking session: Snowy walked up to 800 metres from home. Location update every two seconds - impressive.

  2. Week 2-3

    Battery behaviour and daily use

    Mixed

Real-time during the day, saving mode at night - daily charging necessary. Twice the charger fell off at night: empty battery in the morning. Magnet reinforced with a rubber band as a temporary fix. GPS accuracy in neighbourhood: consistently below ten metres.

  3. Week 4

    Test outside urban area

    Sufficient

Took Snowy on a day trip to the countryside. GPS accuracy in open field: average 35 metres deviation - acceptable. In dense forest: tracker briefly lost signal (two minutes). Battery empty after five hours of real-time tracking.

  4. Week 5-6

    Long-term assessment

    Positive

No technical defects after six weeks. Tracker survived several rainy days without issues (IP67). Snowy left the safe zone twice at night - both times immediately notified via push notification. Exactly what I bought it for.
